Robert Joffrey was a famous American dancer and teacher. He was born in Seattle, Washington. He started dancing at age nine to help with asthma. Later, he studied ballet and modern dance in New York City.

Joffrey was a pioneer in dance. He mixed two styles together. He used the grace of ballet. He also used the floorwork of modern dance. This new way of moving is common today. He started his own group called the Joffrey Ballet in 1954.

His dancers were very hard workers. In 1956, six dancers traveled in a station wagon. They gave shows in eleven different states. Soon, the group traveled much further. They performed in India and the Soviet Union. They even danced at the White House.

Joffrey did not use a strict ranking system for his dancers. He wanted them to work as a group. This helped the dancers feel more united. He died in New York City in 1988 from AIDS. His dance company still performs today. It is known for many different kinds of dance.
