He spent over 50 years making new dances. He was a leader in modern dance. This type of dance focuses on movement.

Cunningham loved to work with other artists. He worked with many musicians and painters. He even worked with fashion designers. One close partner was John Cage. They believed dance and music should not always match. This made their shows very special.

He often used chance to make his dances. This is called chance procedure. He might toss a coin to pick steps. He also used playing cards to choose moves. This meant the order was often a surprise. Dancers might not know the plan until the show!

Cunningham also liked using new tools. He used film to record his work. Later, he used computer programs to help him choreograph. Choreography is the art of making dance moves.
