He was also an artist. He changed how people think about sound. Many people call him an inventor of music.

Cage liked to try new ways to play instruments. He made a "prepared piano." This is a piano with objects placed on the strings.

These objects change the sound the piano makes. He wrote many pieces for this special piano.

He also used chance to make his music. He used an old Chinese book called the I Ching.

This book helped him make choices for his songs. This way, the music was not always the same.

Cage's most famous work is called 4'33". In this piece, the musicians do not play any notes.

Instead, the audience listens to the sounds around them. He wanted people to wake up to the sounds of real life. He studied with a great teacher named Arnold Schoenberg.
