He changed how people think about music and sound. Many critics say he was one of the most influential people in 20th-century music. He was also a leader in the avant-garde movement. This means he liked to try very new and experimental ideas. He even helped develop modern dance through his work with Merce Cunningham. Cage viewed music as a way to wake up to life.

Cage found many ways to make instruments sound different. He became famous for using the prepared piano.

To prepare a piano, a person places objects on or between the strings. This changes the way the piano sounds when played. He wrote many pieces using this method. One famous set of works is called Sonatas and Interludes.

Critics often call these his finest early compositions. These pieces helped show how much he could invent with sound.

His ideas came from many different places and times. In the late 1940s, he studied Indian philosophy and Zen Buddhism.

These studies led him to use chance in his music. He used an ancient Chinese book called the I Ching to make decisions. This tool helped him control chance in his compositions. He started using this method in 1951. This way, the music was not always planned the same way. It allowed for many different results.

Cage had a very interesting journey to become a composer. He was born in Los Angeles on September 5, 1912.

His father was an inventor who made many strange things. Cage studied with a famous teacher named Arnold Schoenberg.

Schoenberg once called Cage an inventor of genius. Cage even promised to spend his whole life making music. He kept this promise for many decades. He even worked hard jobs to pay for his studies. One job involved washing walls in Brooklyn.

Cage's work connects to how we hear the world every day. His most famous piece is called 4'33".

In this piece, the musicians do not play any notes at all. They simply sit and stay present for the whole time. The music is actually the sounds of the room and the people. This challenges what we think a concert should be. It teaches us to listen to the environment around us. Cage wanted us to find beauty in everyday noise.
