He wrote many different kinds of music over sixty years. Some pieces were tiny, like music for small boxes. Other works were huge, like his seven-part opera cycle called Licht. He wrote 370 individual works in total. His music can be for solo instruments or for many people. He even wrote pieces for choirs and large orchestras.

Stockhausen used many interesting ways to make his music. He used musical spatialization to move sound through space. He also used controlled chance to help shape his songs. In his scores, he sometimes used colors to show how to play. One score even had a clear plastic strip that could rotate.

He worked in the WDR Electronic Music Studio in Cologne. He became the director of that studio in 1963. He studied many subjects like acoustics and phonetics. These studies helped him understand how sound works. He wanted to find new ways to organize musical notes.

His musical journey began in Germany during the early 1900s. He was born in Burg Mödrath in 1928.
