He is best known for his unique way of making music. He believed that art should bring different things together. He called this idea "elemental music." To him, music was not just about sound. It should also include dance, poetry, and even visual design. This helped create a total experience for the audience. His work helped people feel the connection between movement and rhythm.

Orff developed a special way to teach music to children. He called this method Schulwerk. This system used music, dance, and gymnastics to help people learn. He wanted beginners to feel the music through their whole bodies. In 1924, he helped start the Günther-Schule in Munich. This school focused on these combined arts. He spent much of his life working with children and beginners. His ideas about how to teach music are still used today.

His life began in Munich, Germany, on July 10, 1895. His father was an army officer with a love for music. His mother was a trained piano player.

Orff started playing the piano when he was only five years old. Later, he studied the cello and the organ. He attended the Munich Academy of Music from 1912 to 1914. During his youth, he also wrote music for puppet plays. He even had some of his small musical pieces published in 1905.

Orff faced many hard times during his life. In 1917, he had to serve in the German Army. While serving, he was badly injured when a trench caved in. This accident caused him to have trouble speaking and moving his left side. He had to work very hard to recover from these injuries. Later, during the Nazi era, his music became very well known. His most famous work, Carmina Burana, premiered in Frankfurt on June 8, 1937. This large piece used unusual rhythms that many people found exciting.

Many people still listen to Orff's music today. His most famous piece, Carmina Burana, is recognized by its powerful sounds. He also wrote music for Shakespeare's play, A Midsummer Night's Dream. This version was performed in Frankfurt in 1939. Orff lived a long life and died in 1982.
