He lived in Vienna, Austria, where he grew up. Berg was known for a unique musical style. He mixed romantic feelings with a method called the twelve-tone technique. This method uses a specific set of musical notes to build a piece. Many people felt his music was very emotional. They said his work showed entire worlds of feeling. This helped him stand out from other composers of his time.

Berg learned how to write music through careful study. He started teaching himself music when he was fifteen years old. Later, he studied with a famous teacher named Arnold Schoenberg. Between 1904 and 1911, Berg studied music theory and harmony. He learned a rule called developing variation from Schoenberg. This means every part of a song comes from one main idea. For example, his Piano Sonata, Op. 1, uses one single musical gesture to build the whole piece.

His life changed many times as he grew older. He was the third of four children in his family. His father ran a successful export business in Vienna. However, things became harder for the family after his father died in 1900. This made school a bit difficult for young Berg. He even had to repeat some grades to pass his exams. During his life, he also served in the Austro-Hungarian Army from 1915 to 1918. These experiences shaped the man and the musician he became.

Berg created many famous works that people still listen to today.

His opera Wozzeck brought him great public success in 1925. He also began a second opera called Lulu in 1928. Near the end of his life, he wrote a beautiful Violin Concerto. He dedicated this piece to the memory of a girl named Manon Gropius. He even used a special folk song from Carinthia in the music. Some of his pieces also used secret codes to hide personal meanings.

Life became very hard for Berg during the 1930s. In Germany, new leaders did not like modern music. They called his work "degenerate music" and stopped many concerts. This made it very difficult for him to share his art. Berg died in Vienna on Christmas Eve in 1935. He was fifty years old and died from blood poisoning. Even so, his legacy lives on through many foundations.
