He is most remembered for his Lieder. Lieder are special art songs that use poems. Wolf had a very unique way of writing music. He made his songs feel very intense and deep. He was wonderful at matching music to the meaning of the words. This helped him express many different feelings through his art.

Wolf learned music from a very young age. His father taught him the piano and the violin when he was four. Later, he studied music theory with a teacher named Sebastian Weixler. Wolf loved music more than almost any other subject. He struggled in school with subjects like Latin. He eventually went to the Vienna Conservatory to study. Even though he faced many hard times in school, he stayed dedicated to his craft.

Wolf's musical ideas were shaped by a famous composer named Richard Wagner. Wagner encouraged the young Wolf to keep composing. Wolf admired Wagner's bold and dramatic style of music. He also had a strong disagreement with the composer Johannes Brahms. Wolf thought Brahms's music was too traditional. Because of his strong opinions, people called him "Wild Wolf." He was a very honest critic of the music he heard.

There were years when Wolf was incredibly busy making music. In 1888 and 1889, he wrote many important works. He traveled to quiet vacation homes to work alone.
