He lived much of his life in Vienna. Wolf is best known for his Lieder. Lieder are art songs that use poems. He was very good at matching music to the words. This made his songs feel very deep and strong.

As a child, Wolf learned piano and violin from his father. He loved music more than school subjects like Latin. He studied at the Vienna Conservatory. Later, he worked as a music teacher. He also worked as a music critic. People called him "Wild Wolf" because he had very strong opinions. He was very honest about the music he heard.

Wolf had times when he was very busy making music. In 1888 and 1889, he wrote many songs. He went to quiet homes to work alone. He wrote the Mörike-Lieder and the Goethe-Lieder. He also made the Spanisches Liederbuch, which is a book of Spanish songs.
