A lied is a special kind of song.

In a lied, a composer sets a poem to music. This means the music follows the words of the poem. Most lieder use a singer and a piano. The piano is not just there to help. It is an equal part of the music. The piano adds character and feeling to the story.

Many lieder focus on romantic love or nature. Some composers choose poems that are already famous. Others write for friends who are poets.

There are two main ways to write these songs. In a strophic song, the music stays the same for each verse. A song called "Das Wandern" is one example. In a through-composed song, the music changes for every line. This helps the music match the exact meaning of the words. Sometimes, composers group many songs together. These groups are called song cycles. They tell a single story or follow one theme. Franz Schubert was a master of this style. He wrote over 600 songs in his short life.
