He was born in 1855. He grew up in Moravia and Vienna. Adler studied the piano. He also studied how to write music. He earned two doctor degrees from his university.

Adler helped start a new way to study music. This field is called musicology. He divided the study into two main parts. One part looks at music history. The other part is called systematic musicology. This looks at how music works. He also looked at how music fits into society.

He was a great teacher. He led a music school in Vienna. Many famous musicians were his students. Adler wrote many books. He edited important books about music from Austria. He liked the music of Haydn and Mozart.

Later in his life, things became hard. In 1938, he had to leave his job. After he died in 1941, people took his library. Many of his books were later returned to his family. Some of his books are now in big libraries in America. His work still helps us understand music today.
