He was known for making music that sounds very unique. One big reason is his love for birds. He studied birds from all over the world. He wrote their real songs into his musical pieces.

Messiaen also had a special way of seeing the world. He had a gift called chromesthesia. This means he saw bright colors when he heard certain musical chords. He used these colors to help him write his music.

Messiaen used many different ways to build his songs. He created a system called modes of limited transposition. This was a special way to use musical scales. He also used rhythms that could be played forward or backward. He called these non-retrogradable rhythms. His music often has very complex rhythms that are hard to follow. He also used sounds from Indonesian gamelan, which is a group of tuned percussion instruments.

His life included some very difficult and brave moments. During World War II, Messiaen was a prisoner of war. He was held in a camp called Stalag VIII-A for nine months. While he was there, he wrote a famous piece called Quartet for the End of Time. He only had a piano, violin, cello, and clarinet to use. He performed this music for other prisoners and the guards.

Messiaen's music connects many different worlds together. He was inspired by Japanese music and the landscapes of Utah. He also drew ideas from the life of St. Francis of Assisi. His many students became famous musicians themselves. Some of them include Pierre Boulez and Karlheinz Stockhausen.
