Francis Poulenc was a famous French composer and pianist.

He was born in Paris on January 7, 1899. His music is special because it has two different sides. Some of his works are light, fun, and full of high spirits. Other pieces are very serious and religious in nature. People often described him as being "half-monk and half-naughty boy." This balance between joy and deep faith defines his unique musical style.

Learning to make music was a big part of his life. He started taking piano lessons at the age of five. His mother was a talented pianist who taught him. When he was eight, he heard the music of Claude Debussy. This sound fascinated him and changed how he thought about music. Later, he studied with a great pianist named Ricardo Viñes.

Viñes was a mentor who taught him piano skills and how to compose. He even helped Poulenc's early works reach their first audiences.

Poulenc's life was shaped by many important people and events. He was the only son of a wealthy manufacturer named Émile Poulenc. Because of his father, he studied at the Lycée Condorcet instead of a music school. He met many famous poets like Guillaume Apollinaire at a bookshop.

He later set many of these poets' words to music. During the First World War, he served in the French army. While working as a typist, he still found time to write songs.

He became part of a famous group of musicians called "Les Six."

This group included composers like Georges Auric and Darius Milhaud. They were all friends who appeared on the same concert programs. They even worked together on pieces like the ballet *Les mariés de la tour Eiffel*. Poulenc was also influenced by the eccentric composer Erik Satie. Satie helped shape his musical ideas during his early years. These friendships helped make his name known throughout France.

As a performer, Poulenc was highly respected around the world. He was a wonderful pianist who toured in Europe and America. He often performed with singers like the baritone Pierre Bernac.

Poulenc was also a pioneer in using the gramophone to share music. He began making many recordings starting in 1928. Even though people once thought he only wrote light music, people now love his serious works. Today, his operas and choral pieces are performed in many countries.
