He was born in Marseille on January 7, 1922. His father, Joseph Rampal, was also a flute player. Even though he loved music, his parents wanted him to be a doctor. During World War II, Rampal had to hide in Paris to avoid forced labor in Germany. While there, he studied at the Paris Conservatoire. He won a top prize for playing a piece called "Le chant de Linos." This talent helped him start a great career in music.

Rampal became a star by bringing back music from a special time. This time was the Baroque era, often called the "Golden Age of the Flute." Many songs from the 1700s had been forgotten by most people. Rampal wanted to find these lost treasures for everyone to enjoy. He traveled to big cities like Berlin, Vienna, and Turin. He spent hours in libraries and archives searching for old sheet music. He even studied a famous book from 1752 called "On Playing The Flute."

To share this music, Rampal worked closely with others. For 35 years, he played with a pianist named Robert Veyron-Lacroix. They performed together in many places like Switzerland, Italy, and Spain. In 1949, they performed a special show in Paris using only flute and piano music. This was a new idea at the time and caused a sensation. They also played on the radio and even on television. This helped many people hear his bright and lively sound.

Rampal's life was full of many different musical groups. In 1946, he helped start the Quintette a Vent Francais with his friends. During the war, they even played forbidden music from a secret radio station. He also served as the Principal Flute at the Paris Opera from 1955 to 1962. This was a very important job for a French musician. He traveled the world, including a trip to Indonesia in 1953. He even performed in the United States in 1958 and 1959.

Because of his hard work, the flute became a very popular solo instrument. He recorded many famous composers like Bach, Mozart, and Vivaldi. He wanted to make sure other flute players had plenty of music to play. He even helped publish sheet music for people in Europe and the United States. His playing was known for being colorful and full of life. Even today, people remember him for his skill and his energy.
