He was a French composer, engineer, and writer. He is most famous for creating a new kind of music. He called this style musique concrète, which means "concrete music" in French. Instead of starting with written notes, he started with real sounds. He believed that any sound could be used to make art. This idea helped start the world of experimental and electronic music.

Making this music was a very special way of working. Schaeffer used tools like gramophones and early tape recorders. He would take a sound and change it in many ways. He might play a sound backwards to make it strange. He would also speed sounds up or slow them down. Sometimes he used a technique called tape splicing. This meant he cut pieces of tape and joined them together. These steps helped him build beautiful and new sound-scapes.

Schaeffer had a very interesting life and education. He was born in Nancy, France, in 1910. His parents were both musicians, but they wanted him to be an engineer. He studied at the École Polytechnique and the École supérieure d'électricité in Paris. In 1934, he began working as an engineer in Strasbourg. Later, he moved to Paris in 1936 to work in radio. This is where his love for both engineering and sound truly met.

He did many important things during his career. In 1942, he founded the Studio d'Essai to explore new sounds. In 1951, he started the Groupe de Recherche de Musique Concrète, or GRMC. He was the first composer to make music using magnetic tape. One of his famous pieces was the "Railroad Study."

In this piece, he used recordings of real trains. He also wrote books like "Traité des objets musicaux" in 1966. He even taught music at the Paris Conservatory for many years.

Today, we can hear Schaeffer's ideas in almost all modern music. His work with recording and sampling is used by many artists now. He taught students like Éliane Radigue and Jean Michel Jarre. Jarre even dedicated an album called "Oxygene 7-13" to him.

Schaeffer showed us that music is about more than just instruments. He believed in the joy of playing with the sounds around us. Because of him, we know that even a train can be a song.
