Perec was a member of a creative group called Oulipo. This group used strict rules to make art. He often used these rules to explore deep themes. His work frequently dealt with identity and loss. Many of his stories also touched on memory. He used clever wordplay to express these feelings.

One way Perec wrote was through something called a lipogram. In his 1969 novel, *La Disparition*, he wrote an entire book without using the letter "e."

He also wrote a novella called *Les revenentes*. In that piece, the letter "e" was the only vowel used. This was a very difficult task for a writer. He even changed the spelling of the title to fit his rule. These constraints helped him create unique patterns in his prose.

Perec's life was shaped by many important events. He was born in a working-class part of Paris. His parents were Polish Jews who moved to France in the 1920s. During the Second World War, his father died as a soldier in 1940. His mother was killed during the Holocaust, likely in Auschwitz after 1943.

In 1942, he went to live with his aunt and uncle. They formally adopted him in 1945. These experiences of absence stayed with him throughout his life.

His career included many different jobs and successes. He worked as an archivist at a research laboratory in Paris starting in 1961. This job lasted until 1978. He also served as a paratrooper in the French army around 1958. His masterpiece, *La Vie mode d'emploi*, was published in 1978.

This book won the Prix Médicis award. It tells stories about people in a Parisian apartment block. The 99 chapters follow a pattern like a knight's move on a chessboard.

Today, many people remember Perec's amazing work. In 1982, an asteroid was named after him. A street in the 20th arrondissement of Paris also bears his name.

In 2002, the French postal service even released a stamp to honor him. You might even see his face in a Google Doodle. His books are translated into many languages, including English. Writers still study his clever ways of using words. He showed that even strict rules can lead to great art.
