His writing is famous for using complex rules and wordplay. These methods helped him explore themes like identity and loss. He was a key member of a creative group called Oulipo. This group focused on using mathematical or linguistic constraints in art. Perec used these structures to find new ways of telling stories.

One of his most famous techniques was called a lipogram. A lipogram is a piece of writing that avoids a specific letter. In his 1969 novel, *La Disparition*, he wrote a 300-page book without the letter "e."

He also wrote a novella titled *Les revenentes*. In this work, he used a different constraint called a univocalic. This means the letter "e" was the only vowel allowed in the text. He even changed the spelling of the title to follow this rule. These difficult tasks required immense skill and planning.

Another major work was his masterpiece, *La Vie mode d'emploi*, published in 1978. The English title is *Life: A User's Manual*. This 600-page novel is described as a tapestry of interwoven stories. It follows the lives of people in a fictional Parisian apartment block. The book uses 99 chapters to tell these stories. The chapters move through the building like a knight's tour on a chessboard. This mathematical pattern guides the reader through different rooms and stairwells. The novel won the prestigious Prix Médicis award.

Perec's personal history deeply influenced his literary themes. He was born in a working-class district of Paris. His parents, Icek Judko and Cyrla Peretz, were Polish Jews. They had emigrated to France during the 1920s. During the Second World War, Perec experienced great loss. His father died in 1940 while serving in the French Army. His mother was killed during the Holocaust, likely in Auschwitz after 1943.

He was raised by his paternal aunt and uncle from 1942. These experiences of absence and memory became central to his writing.

Beyond novels, Perec had a varied professional life. He served as a paratrooper in the French army around 1958. In 1961, he began working as an archivist at a research laboratory. He stayed in this position at the Hôpital Saint-Antoine until 1978. Some people believe his work with records influenced his precise style. He also created crossword puzzles for the publication *Le Point*. He even made films, winning the Prix Jean Vigo in 1974 for his first cinematic work. His career showed a constant desire to organize and explore information.

His work often used humor and strange experiments. He wrote a spoof scientific paper called "Cantatrix sopranica L." This paper used multi-lingual puns and jokes. It described experiments involving sopranos and rotten tomatoes. He also wrote a long palindrome in his poetry. A palindrome is a word or phrase that reads the same backward and forward. This specific one contained 1,247 words and 5,566 letters. Such works show how he pushed the limits of what language could do.

Today, Perec's legacy is recognized in many different ways. In 1982, an asteroid was named Asteroid no. 2817 in his honor. A street in the 20th arrondissement of Paris is also named after him.

The French postal service released a commemorative stamp in 2002. His face has even appeared as a Google Doodle. His books continue to be translated into many languages, such as English. Researchers and writers still study his unique methods of constrained writing. He remains a significant figure in modern literature.
