He was also a highly influential editor and co-founder of the Oulipo. This group was a literary workshop that used mathematical constraints to create art. Queneau was famous for his wit and his cynical sense of humor. He spent much of his professional life at the Gallimard publishing house. He rose from a reader in 1938 to the director of l'Encyclopédie de la Pléiade in 1956.

Queneau's creative process often involved complex mathematical structures. He believed that elements of a text could be predetermined or calculated. One remarkable example is his work *A Hundred Thousand Billion Poems*. For this book, he wrote 140 lines divided into 10 individual sonnets. These lines can be rearranged in almost any possible order. Queneau calculated that reading every single combination would take 190,258,751 years. This project led him to collaborate with mathematician François Le Lionnais. Their partnership eventually resulted in the founding of the Oulipo in 1960.

His writing also explored the nuances of spoken language. In 1959, he published the novel *Zazie dans le métro*. This book uses colloquial language instead of standard written French. The very first word is a long, playful phonetic transcription: "Doukipudonktan." This word is a way of writing the question, "Why does it stink so much?" This work was later adapted into a film by Louis Malle. The film became part of the famous *Nouvelle Vague* or New Wave film movement.

Another of his most significant works is *Exercises in Style*. This book tells a very simple story about a man seeing a stranger twice. However, Queneau tells this same story in 99 different ways. This demonstrates the massive variety of styles available to a storyteller. His work shows how a single event can change based on the language used. This book has inspired various artists in different fields. For example, the composer José Evangelista created a song cycle based on these texts.

Queneau's early life included many diverse experiences and roles. He was born in Le Havre in 1903 and moved to Paris in 1920. He studied philosophy at the University of Paris and earned his baccalauréat in 1925. During the 1920s and 1930s, he held several odd jobs to earn money. He worked as a bank teller, a tutor, and a translator. He also wrote a column for the daily newspaper *L'Intransigeant*. These varied roles helped shape his wide-ranging knowledge.

His social and political life was also quite active. In 1924, he briefly joined the Surrealist movement. He met many famous artists like André Breton and Georges Bataille. However, Queneau eventually separated himself from the Surrealists by 1930. He participated in several left-wing and anti-fascist causes during his life. During the Nazi occupation of France, he published in journals associated with the Resistance. He remained a supporter of various social causes throughout his career.

Queneau's legacy continues to influence both literature and science. His interest in math encouraged the mathematician Jacques Lacan to study game theory. This helped connect mathematics to the field of psychoanalysis. He also explored the foundations of literature through quasi-mathematical derivations. His final work, published in 1976, alluded to the mathematician David Hilbert. Even in his later years, he sought to find the hidden rules of writing.

Throughout his life, Queneau bridged the gap between art and logic. He was elected to the Académie Goncourt in 1951. He also served on the jury for the Cannes Film Festival in 1955. His ability to combine humor with rigorous structure makes his work unique. He proved that writing could be both a beautiful art and a mathematical puzzle. His many books and poems remain important parts of French culture.
