He was a central figure in the Nouveau Roman movement. This literary trend emerged during the 1960s. He worked alongside other writers like Nathalie Sarraute, Michel Butor, and Claude Simon. His work changed how authors approached storytelling and character depth. He focused on the way objects and surfaces appear to the senses. This approach helped redefine modern French literature.

His writing style is often called "phenomenological" or a "theory of pure surface."

This method uses methodical and geometric descriptions of physical objects. Instead of explaining a character's inner feelings, he describes their surroundings. He uses repetitive descriptions to reveal hidden emotions like jealousy. The reader must slowly piece the plot together from these details. This process is similar to the disruptions found in psychoanalysis. His fractured timelines make a novel resemble a cubist painting. In cubism, an artist shows multiple perspectives at once.

Robbe-Grillet's career involved many different professional roles. He was trained as an agricultural engineer. His work as an agronomist took him to Martinique, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, and Morocco. He also served as a literary advisor for Les Éditions de Minuit from 1955 to 1985. From 1971 to 1995, he was a professor at New York University. There, he lectured specifically on his own novels. He also led the Centre for Sociology of Literature in Brussels from 1980 to 1988.

His literary history began with several key publications. His first published novel, The Erasers (Les Gommes), arrived in 1953. This book has a structure based on the tale of Oedipus. In 1955, he published The Voyeur (Le Voyeur), which won the Prix des Critiques. This novel features a character named Mathias on an island. He also wrote La Jalousie in 1957. This book is set on a banana plantation. The title also refers to "jalousie," which are horizontal window blinds. The character's observations change slightly each time he looks through them.

He worked with actor Jean-Louis Trintignant on four different films. His final film, Gradiva, was released in 2006.

However, he was never formally received by the institution. This was due to his disputes with their traditional procedures. He refused to wear the required green tails or carry a sabre. He also declined to submit a welcome speech in advance. He preferred to improvise his remarks instead. He viewed these specific traditions as outdated.

His life was marked by various political and personal engagements. In 1960, he signed the Manifesto of the 121. This document supported the Algerian struggle for independence. During the years 1943 and 1944, he worked as a machinist in Nuremberg. He completed his diploma at the National Institute of Agronomy in 1945. He eventually died in 2008 in Caen. His death followed complications from heart problems. His diverse life connected science, politics, and complex art.
