He was a leader of a movement called the Nouveau Roman. This group changed how people wrote stories in the 1960s. He was also a professor at New York University from 1971 to 1995.

He was even elected to the Académie française in 2004. This is a very prestigious group of writers in France. He held seat number 32 in that group. He chose not to wear their traditional green clothes or carry a sword. He thought these old customs were outdated.

His way of writing was very unique and careful. Instead of telling you how a character feels, he describes objects. He uses geometric shapes and repeating patterns in his descriptions. This style is sometimes called "phenomenological" or a "theory of pure surface."

Readers must piece the story together themselves. They look at odd details to find the meaning. It is like looking at a cubist painting. In cubism, art shows many different sides of a thing at once. His books often feel like these complex paintings.

Robbe-Grillet had a very busy life before he was a full-time writer. He was born in Brest, France, to a family of scientists. He actually trained to be an agricultural engineer. He worked as a machinist in Nuremberg during the years 1943 and 1944. Later, his work as an agronomist took him to many places. He visited Martinique, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, and Morocco.

In 1960, he signed a document called the Manifesto of the 121. This was to support the struggle for independence in Algeria.

He wrote many important novels that people still study today. His first published novel was The Erasers in 1953. Another famous book is The Voyeur, which was published in 1955. This book won the Prix des Critiques award. He also wrote La Jalousie in 1957. In that story, a character looks through window blinds. The word "jalousie" is also the French name for those blinds.

He even wrote a book called Ghosts in the Mirror in 1984. This was a more traditional autobiography about his own life.

Making movies was just as important to him as writing books. He worked with Alain Resnais on the film Last Year at Marienbad. This film won the Golden Lion prize in 1961. It was even nominated for an Academy Award for its script.
