Jean Ricardou was a famous French writer and thinker.

He spent his life exploring how stories are built. He was also a dedicated teacher for many years. He taught young boys in primary school starting in 1953. Later, he taught high school students in Paris. He taught many subjects like history, science, and geography. He even worked as a visiting professor at universities around the world. Ricardou believed that knowing a writer's life was not important for reading. He felt that personal details did not help a reader understand a book.

Ricardou wanted the act of writing to be an adventure. He was a leader in a movement called the French New Novel. This group changed how authors used descriptions in their books. Instead of telling a simple story, he focused on the writing itself. He wrote three novels and several books of theory between 1961 and 1984. His first novel was titled L'Observatoire de Cannes, published in 1961. His second novel, La Prise de Constantinople, won the Feneon prize in 1966.

This book was very unusual and innovative for its time.

One way Ricardou made his books special was through clever wordplay. In La Prise de Constantinople, the front and back covers had different titles. The pages and chapters did not even have numbers. He also used a method called overdetermination to build his stories. This meant every part of the text needed at least two reasons to be there. He wanted to build books starting from "nothing" rather than a real place. This created a new kind of story called a polydiegetic novel.

These books combined different worlds that did not usually fit together.

Later in his life, Ricardou invented a new science of writing. He called this new field "textics" or la textique. He began developing this idea in 1985 while teaching in Paris. He believed that having strict rules actually helped people be more creative. He thought that rules acted like machinery for new ideas. Instead of stopping thoughts, these rules helped him find things he never imagined. He ran annual seminars on textics at Cerisy from 1989 until 2015.

This work helped connect his fiction, his theories, and his teaching.

Ricardou found inspiration in many different places. When he was five years old, he learned to sing canons in school. A canon is a song where people sing the same melody at different times. This staggered repetition fascinated him and helped him understand how stories work. He even won a writing prize at age eleven for an essay about his childhood. His life showed that writing, thinking, and teaching can all work together. He remained a busy advisor for the International Cultural Center at Cerisy-la-Salle. His complete works are still being published today by Les Impressions nouvelles.
