He spent his life studying how people see the world. He was born in Amélie-les-Bains-Palalda in 1930. He even spent part of his childhood in Casablanca. Restany studied at many different universities in France, Italy, and Ireland. He was a very busy thinker who helped many artists. He wanted to understand the meaning behind what people create. His work helped change how we think about art today.

In 1960, Restany and an artist named Yves Klein did something big. They created a new idea called Nouveau Réalisme, or New Realism. They first shared this idea at a gallery in Milan. This group brought together many artists from France and Italy. Some members included Arman, Jean Tinguely, and Niki de Saint Phalle. They wanted to look at reality in new ways. They lived in a time when many new things were being made in factories. The group wanted to find human meaning in a world of industry.

Restany's ideas changed after a very big trip in 1978. He went on an expedition into the Amazon rainforest. He traveled up the Rio Negro river with two other artists. They went from Manaus toward the borders of Colombia and Venezuela. This journey was a very deep and unsettling experience for him. He saw that the Amazon was a special sanctuary for nature. This trip led him to write a new idea called Integral Naturalism. He believed art should connect with the spirit of nature.

Restany was also a leader in the world of design and writing. In 1961, he helped start the Galerie J in Paris. He also co-founded a journal called Natura Integrale in Milan. In 1982, he helped start the Domus Academy in Milan. This was the first school for design after someone finishes university. He worked as an editor for several art magazines too. He even helped organize large art shows like the São Paulo Biennial. He spent much of his time between Paris and Milan.

Later in his life, Restany looked toward the future of technology. He became very interested in art made on computers. He studied digital art and the World Wide Web. He helped organize shows like "Logo, Non Logo" in New York City. Restany was a man who always looked for what was new. He died in Paris in 2003. He is buried in the Montparnasse Cemetery. His life showed how art and nature are always connected.
