He spent his life thinking about how people make art. In 1960, he and an artist named Yves Klein started a group. They called this group Nouveau Réalisme, or New Realism. This group included many artists from France and Italy. They wanted to look at the real world in new ways. They worked during a time when many new things were being made in factories.

In 1978, Restany went on a big trip. He traveled into the heart of the Amazon rainforest. He went up the Rio Negro river. This trip changed his ideas about art. He felt that nature was a very special place. He wrote about a new idea called Integral Naturalism. He wanted art to connect with the power of nature.

Restany also helped start a design school in Milan. Later in his life, he studied art made on computers. He was interested in digital art and the web. He helped organize many large art shows around the world. He died in Paris in 2003.
