He did not like old rules for art. He thought many art schools were too fancy. Instead, he wanted art to feel real and human. He liked things from everyday life. He painted people in the city or the country.

Dubuffet used a very special way to make his art. He did not just use a brush. He mixed thick oil paint with many things. He used sand, mud, coal dust, and pebbles. He even used glass, straw, and tar.

This made his work very thick. He could scratch or slash marks into the paste. Some critics did not like this. They thought his work was like scraping a dustbin.

He also started a movement called art brut. This means "raw art." He loved art made by people who were not pros. This included art by children and people in hospitals. He wanted to find art that was free and simple. He even made a large collection of this art. It is now kept in a museum in Switzerland.
