He was a leader in a movement called Nouveau réalisme. This group started in 1960 with the critic Pierre Restany. Klein was also a pioneer of performance art, which means the art is an event. His work helped lead to other styles like minimal art and pop art. He wanted people to experience art in new, deep ways. He believed art could be about ideas and feelings rather than just objects.

Klein used many different ways to make his art. He created a special, bright blue paint called International Klein Blue.

He mixed this pigment with a synthetic resin to keep it shiny. Sometimes he used sponges to create textures on his canvases.

He also tried a method called Anthropometry. In these performances, he used people as "living brushes." He covered models in blue paint and had them press their bodies onto paper. He even made art by tying canvases to his car during rainstorms.

His life was full of many different interests and travels. He was born in Nice, France, to two painters. His father, Fred Klein, painted in a post-impressionist style. His mother, Marie Raymond, was a leader in the Art informel movement. Klein studied languages and maritime skills from 1942 to 1946. He also traveled to Italy, Great Britain, and Spain. Between 1948 and 1952, he spent a lot of time studying and traveling. These experiences helped shape his unique way of seeing the world.

Klein was very skilled in both art and sports. He was a master of judo and traveled to Japan in 1953. He became the first European to reach the rank of yondan. This means he earned a fourth-degree black belt at the Kodokan. He even wrote a book about judo in 1954. In the art world, he held a famous show in 1957 in Milan. This show featured 11 identical blue canvases called the Blue Epoch.

He even released 1,001 blue balloons to celebrate an exhibition in Paris.

Klein's ideas often pushed the limits of what art could be. He once held an exhibition called "The Void" in 1958.

He cleared out an entire gallery to show nothing at all. About 3,000 people waited in line to see the empty room. He also created a symphony that was 20 minutes of sound and 20 minutes of silence. This music was meant to feel like a strange, vast universe. Klein wanted his art to help people reach a state of total freedom.
