Piet Mondrian was a famous Dutch painter from the 20th century.

He is known for creating abstract art. This means his paintings do not look like real things from nature. Instead, they use simple shapes and colors to find a special kind of beauty. Mondrian believed that art should be higher than reality. He wanted to find universal values through his work. He called his unique style Neoplasticism. This was a way to create pure art that felt balanced and spiritual.

To make his art, Mondrian followed very specific rules. He limited his colors to only three primary hues: red, blue, and yellow. He also used three primary values, which are black, white, and gray. His paintings used black lines to create shapes like squares and rectangles. These lines were always either horizontal or vertical.

In his early abstract works, the lines were thin and gray. As he grew older, the black lines became much thicker. He also began to let the lines stretch all the way to the edges of the canvas. He used more white space in these later paintings.

Mondrian was born in Amersfoort, Netherlands, in 1872.

His father was a drawing teacher, so Piet learned about art very young. He lived in Winterswijk for many years while he was growing up. In 1892, he went to the Academy for Fine Art in Amsterdam. At first, he painted natural scenes like windmills, fields, and rivers. These were called landscapes. He even painted a tree at dusk in a work called Evening.

These early works helped him search for his own personal style.

Many big changes happened in Mondrian's life and work. In 1912, he moved to Paris and changed the spelling of his name. He dropped an "a" from Mondriaan to fit in with the French art scene.

While in Paris, he saw Cubism, which uses geometric shapes. Later, World War I forced him to stay in the Netherlands. During this time, he helped start a group called De Stijl. He worked with another artist named Theo van Doesburg. They used a journal to share their new ideas about art and design.

Mondrian's ideas about art connect to how we see the world today. He wanted to find a harmony that everyone could understand. His use of primary colors and straight lines changed how people thought about painting. He moved away from showing what the eye sees to showing what the mind feels. His work was influenced by spiritual studies and movements like Theosophy. These studies helped him try to reach a deeper knowledge of nature. Even though his art looks very simple, it was a big step for the art world.
