Piet Mondrian was a famous Dutch painter.

Early in his life, he painted things from nature. He painted windmills, fields, and rivers. He even painted a tree at dusk.

As time went on, his art changed. He moved to Paris in 1912. There, he saw new styles of art. He began to use simple shapes. He wanted to find a universal beauty. This led him to a style called Neoplasticism.

He used a very strict set of rules. He used only three primary colors: red, blue, and yellow. He also used black, white, and gray. His paintings used black lines to make squares and rectangles. These lines were often horizontal or vertical.

In his later years, his work became even simpler. He used more white space. He also let his lines reach the very edge of the canvas. His art is still loved today for its clean look.
