Hilma af Klint was a Swedish artist who changed how we think about art.

She is now known as a pioneer of abstract art. Abstract art uses shapes and colors instead of painting real objects. Her work was very special because it was based on spiritual ideas. She wanted to show things that people cannot see with their eyes. Many people believe her work was among the first major abstract art in the West. This was even before famous artists like Kandinsky or Mondrian began their abstract work.

To make her art, Hilma used a very unique way of working. She was part of a group of women called "The Five." This group met to study spiritual ideas and held séances. A séance is a meeting where people try to talk to spirits. They called these spirits the "High Masters." Hilma felt these masters guided her hand while she painted. She said the pictures were painted directly through her without any sketches. She worked very fast and did not change her brush strokes. This helped her create a new visual language using geometric shapes.

Hilma's journey into art began with nature and careful study. She grew up on the island of Adelsö near Lake Mälaren. The plants and nature there inspired her for a long time. She studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm. There, she learned to paint portraits, landscapes, and plants. She even won a scholarship for a studio in the city. While she earned money by painting normal things, her abstract art was a secret practice. She kept her spiritual paintings separate from her professional work for many years.

Between 1906 and 1915, Hilma created a massive collection for a "Temple." This collection includes 196 paintings grouped into different series. One famous set is called "The Ten Largest." These huge paintings measure about 240 by 320 centimeters. They show the stages of life from being a child to being old. She used colors to represent different meanings in her work. For example, blue stood for the female spirit and yellow for the male. Pink and red were used to show physical or spiritual love.

Not everyone understood her vision during her lifetime. In 1908, she met a man named Rudolf Steiner. He was the founder of the Anthroposophical Society. Steiner told her that people would not understand her art for fifty years. This news was very hard for Hilma to hear. She even stopped painting for four years because of it. Before she died, she left over 1,200 paintings and 125 diaries to her nephew. Today, her work is celebrated by art historians all over the world.
