He was a Symbolist artist. This means he used images to represent deep ideas or feelings. His art often feels like a strange fantasy world. He loved to paint scenes from ancient myths and legends. Many of his paintings show gods or heroes in beautiful settings. He used bright and strong colors to make his work stand out.

Böcklin learned his craft by studying in many different cities. He first studied at the Düsseldorf academy. His teacher sent him to Antwerp and Brussels to copy great masters. Later, he worked at the Louvre in Paris. In 1850, he moved to Rome to find new ideas. The sights in Rome helped him start painting mythological figures. He also spent time in Munich and Weimar. He even taught as a professor at the Weimar academy for two years.

Böcklin's life included many personal moments. He was born in Basel to a father in the silk trade. In 1853, he married Angela Rosa Pascucci in Rome. They had fourteen children together. Sadly, five of their children died when they were very young. He also faced health struggles during his life. In 1859, he almost died from a sickness called typhoid. He eventually died in 1901 in a place called Fiesole. He is buried in the Cimitero degli Allori in Italy.

He painted these versions between 1880 and 1886. The paintings show a quiet, dreamlike island. A woman named Madame Berna asked for one version. She wanted a painting with a very dreamy feeling. These works are still very important in the art world today. Many museums, like the Kunstmuseum Basel, keep his paintings safe.

Böcklin's art did more than just sit on walls. It actually inspired many musicians to write new songs.

Famous composers like Sergei Rachmaninoff wrote music based on his paintings. Other musicians, like Gustav Mahler, were also inspired by his work. Even later artists, like the Surrealists, admired his style. Some people even named a style of writing after him. His work connects the world of painting to the world of music. It shows how one beautiful idea can travel through many different arts.
