He was a leading figure in the Russian avant-garde movement. This means he was part of a group of artists who tried new and bold ideas. Malevich wanted to find a way to express pure feeling and spirituality. He did this through a concept he called Suprematism. This style moved away from painting real objects from the world. Instead, it focused on simple shapes and colors to reach deep emotions. His work helped start the era of abstract art in the 20th century.

In his early years, Malevich practiced many different ways of painting. He studied styles like Impressionism and Cubism by looking at reproductions of art. He was also inspired by Russian folk art and religious icons. He even worked as a designer for a perfume company called Brocard & Co.

He designed a bottle for a scent called Severny. The bottle had a jagged shape that looked like an iceberg. It even had a small polar bear on the top. This showed how he could use his artistic ideas in everyday things.

Malevich was born in 1879 in Kiev, which is in modern-day Ukraine.

His family was ethnic Polish and they had moved to the area after a failed uprising. He was the first of fourteen children in his family. As a young man, he moved to many different places like Parkhomovka and Kursk. In 1904, he arrived in Moscow to study art. He worked hard to learn, even though he was not always accepted into formal art schools. He eventually met his second wife, Sofia, in 1909.

His most famous work happened in the early 1910s. In 1915, he painted a very radical piece called Black Square.

This painting was so different that it drew a line between old art and new art. Malevich also wrote books to explain his ideas, such as The Non-Objective World. He founded an artists' group called UNOVIS in 1919. He spent time teaching in cities like Vitebsk and Kiev. In 1927, he had exhibitions in Warsaw and Berlin, which was his only time leaving Russia.

Later in life, things became much harder for Malevich. Because of new government rules in the Soviet Union, he had to return to painting real objects. He was also diagnosed with cancer in 1933. He was not allowed to leave the country to get medical help. Even while he was sick, he continued to paint and show his work. He died on May 15, 1935, at the age of 56. Today, his art is shown in great museums like the Guggenheim. Many artists who came after him were inspired by his brave ideas.
