He was a key member of the School of Paris movement. Along with his wife, Sonia Delaunay, he helped start a new art style called Orphism. This movement was famous for using very bright colors and geometric shapes. Delaunay believed that color was a powerful thing on its own. He thought that painting was a visual art based on how light hits the eye. His work helped people see that color could express many different ideas.

His way of painting changed many times during his life. Early on, he used a style called Neo-Impressionism. In this style, he used small, mosaic-like cubes of color to build his pictures.

He also used a solar disk as a personal symbol in his work. Later, he moved toward abstract art, which does not look like real objects. Between 1912 and 1914, he focused on paintings that were not about people or things. Instead, these paintings were all about the beauty of pure color.

Robert was born in Paris to George Delaunay and Berthe Félicie de Rose. After his parents divorced, he grew up with his aunt and uncle in La Ronchère. In 1902, he went to Paris to study Decorative Arts at Ronsin's atelier. He became a professional painter at age 19 and showed his work in 1904. He later traveled to Brittany, where he met the artist Henri Rousseau in 1906. During this time, he also became close friends with the painter Jean Metzinger. They even painted portraits of each other using bright rectangles of pigment.

Many important events happened during his career. In 1909, he began a famous series of paintings of the Eiffel Tower.

In 1910, he married Sonia Terk, and they moved into a studio in Paris. He also joined a group called The Blue Rider in 1910. During the First World War, the Delaunays moved to Spain and then to Portugal. They lived in Madrid and later shared a home in Portugal with other artists. Robert eventually returned to Paris in 1921 after the war ended.

Robert Delaunay's ideas influenced many other famous artists around the world. Painters like Paul Klee, Franz Marc, and Piet Mondrian were inspired by his work. Even the poet Guillaume Apollinaire used Delaunay's ideas to explain the Orphism movement. Today, you can find his paintings in many great museums. His work is kept in the Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris. You can also see his art in the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

His bright, colorful world still inspires people to look at light in new ways.
