He lived in Romania and France during the 20th century. Ionesco changed how people thought about theater. He helped start a style called the Theatre of the Absurd. This style uses strange ideas to explore life. His work often feels like a dream or a puzzle. He wanted to show how hard it can be to truly talk to others. Some of his plays show a world that feels very weird.

Ionesco found his unique style while learning a new language. At age 40, he used a method to study English. He copied many simple sentences to memorize them. He noticed that these basic facts felt very strange. For example, learning that the floor is down felt surprising. He looked at characters like Mr. and Mrs. Smith in his lessons. Their simple talk felt like broken fragments of words. This idea led to his first play, The Bald Soprano, in 1948.

His life began in Slatina, Romania, in 1909. Some sources say he was born in 1912. He chose that year to match a writer he admired. He grew up in France and had a very important experience there. He once felt a sudden sense of bright light and floating. After this feeling left, the real world seemed very different to him. He felt the world was full of repetitive actions. This feeling stayed with him as he grew up.

Ionesco wrote many different kinds of plays. Some were short sketches, like The Lesson from 1950. Others were longer stories, such as Rhinoceros. In that play, people turn into animals one by one. He also wrote about a man named Bérenger in several works. Bérenger is a character who shows how strange reality can be. Ionesco even wrote one novel called The Hermit in 1975. His play The Bald Soprano has played at the Théâtre de la Huchette since 1952.

Many people celebrated his great skill as a writer. He became a member of the Académie française in 1970. He also won the Austrian State Prize for European Literature. In 1973, he received the Jerusalem Prize for his work. His plays help us think about big ideas like life and death. They show us that the world can be both funny and serious. Even today, people still watch his plays in theaters.
