He was born in Romania in 1909. He later lived in France for much of his life. Ionesco changed the way people wrote for the stage.

He was part of a movement called the Theatre of the Absurd. This style of drama uses strange ideas. His first play was called The Bald Soprano. He wrote it after studying English. He noticed how simple sentences could sound very odd. This led him to make plays that felt like wild dreams.

Some of his plays show characters who cannot talk well. They might repeat words or act like puppets. In his play Rhinoceros, people turn into animals. This was his way of showing how people sometimes follow others without thinking. He also wrote about a man named Bérenger. This character shows how strange the world can feel.

Ionesco won many big prizes for his work. He was even a member of the Académie française. One of his plays has been in the same theater since 1952. That is a very long time for one show to run.
