He wrote many different things like plays, poems, and novels. He often wrote in both English and French. Many people believe he changed the way modern theatre works. His stories often feel sad but also funny in a strange way. This style is sometimes called the Theatre of the Absurd.

He is remembered as one of the most influential writers of the 20th century.

Beckett had a very busy life with many different interests. He was a natural athlete who played cricket very well. He was a left-handed batsman and a left-arm medium-pace bowler. He even played first-class cricket for Dublin University. This made him the only Nobel Prize winner to play that level of cricket.

He also studied music, art, and many different languages. He studied French, Italian, and English while at Trinity College Dublin.

His career began with teaching and writing about other authors. He worked as a lecturer in Dublin starting in 1930. He was a close friend of the famous writer James Joyce. This friendship had a huge effect on his own work. Beckett even helped Joyce with research for a book.

During the Second World War, he joined a group called the French Resistance. He was awarded the Croix de Guerre in 1949 for his service. In 1961, he shared the Prix International with Jorge Luis Borges. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1969.
