He is a novelist, a playwright, and a painter. He also works as a photographer and a film director. In 2000, he won the Nobel Prize in Literature. This is a very high honor for writers. The Nobel committee praised his clever use of language. They also noted his deep and universal insights. His work connects many different worlds through art.

Many of Gao's stories come from his own life experiences. He often writes about the meeting point of Western and Eastern cultures. For example, his famous novel is titled Soul Mountain. He wrote this book after a long ten-month journey. He traveled along the Yangtze River in China. During his trip, he met many different groups of people. He wrote about the Qiang, Miao, and Yi peoples. This book is a mix of a memoir and a novel.

His journey into art began when he was a young boy. His mother was an actress in the Anti-Japanese Theatre. Because of her, he grew to love painting and theatre. He studied many types of art under a painter named Yun Zongying. He learned how to do ink and wash painting. He also studied oil painting and clay sculpture. Gao's career faced many hard times in China. In the 1970s, he was sent to Anhui Province for hard labor. He had to destroy some of his early writings then. His plays, like The Bus Stop, were sometimes stopped by the government. In 1987, he left China and moved toward France. He eventually became a French citizen in 1997. The French government even gave him an award in 1992. This award was the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.

Today, people all over the world study his many works. His plays use a style called absurdist drama. This means they use unusual ways to show life. Some of his plays, like Signal Alarm, were breakthroughs in theatre. His art is not just about one country or one group. He says he does not belong to any single political party. Instead, he focuses on the skill of his craft. His life shows how art can travel across borders.
