He often wrote very long sentences that could last for a whole page. Instead of using many full stops, he used commas to keep the ideas flowing. He did not use quotation marks when characters were talking to each other. Instead, he just used capital letters to show a new person was speaking. In his book called Blindness, he did not use any names at all. He only described people by certain features to talk about identity.

His life began in a small village called Azinhaga in 1922.

He was born into a very poor family of landless peasants. His father's nickname was Saramago, which is the Portuguese word for wild radish. This name accidentally became his official last name when he was born. As a young man, he worked as a lathe operator and a car mechanic. He loved reading and spent much of his free time at a public library. Later, he worked as a journalist and an editor for a publishing company.

Saramago's ideas sometimes caused big arguments in his home country.

In 1992, the government removed one of his books from a prize list. They said the book was offensive to the Catholic Church. This made him feel like his work was being censored by politicians. Because of this, he moved to the Spanish island of Lanzarote. He lived there with his wife, Pilar del Río, until he passed away. He continued to write even while living in exile.

Saramago cared deeply about people and the planet. In 2007, he started the José Saramago Foundation. This group works to protect human rights and help the environment. He also wanted to promote culture in Portugal and other nations. He died in June 2010 after suffering from leukemia.
