Many people call him the father of Portuguese democracy. He spent his life working to make his country a free place. For a long time, Portugal was ruled by a dictatorship. This meant that people did not have many choices in how they lived. Soares wanted to change this so that everyone had a voice. He believed in fairness and the power of the people.

His journey started as a student of history and philosophy. He studied at the University of Lisbon and became a teacher. Because he spoke out against the leaders, he was arrested many times by the police. He even had to live in other countries like France and Italy for a while. In 1973, he helped start the Socialist Party. He served as its leader for many years. He wanted to build a group that stood for democratic ideas.

In 1974, a big change called the Carnation Revolution happened in Portugal. This event helped end the dictatorship. Soares came back home to help lead the new government. He worked on many important tasks during this time. One big job was helping Portugal's overseas colonies become independent. He met with leaders like Samora Machel to help make this happen. This was a very busy and important time for the whole country.

Soares held two very high jobs in the government. He was the Prime Minister from 1976 to 1978 and again from 1983 to 1985. During his time as Prime Minister, he helped Portugal join the European Economic Community. This helped Portugal work closely with other European nations. Later, he was elected President of Portugal. He served as president from 1986 to 1996.

He even won a second term as president in 1991.

As president, he loved to connect with the people of Portugal. He started a program called the Open Presidency. He traveled all around the country to talk to citizens. He wanted to hear about their lives and their worries. He talked about things like the environment and different local areas. Even after he retired in 1996, he stayed busy with important work. He passed away in 2017.
