Sir John Compton was a very important leader for the island of Saint Lucia. He was born on April 29, 1925, in a place called Canouan.

Later, he moved to Saint Lucia to live and study. He went to school in Wales and London to learn about law and economics. After he finished his studies, he became a lawyer in 1951. He spent his whole life working to help his people and his country.

Compton started his work in politics in 1954. At first, he was an independent member of the Saint Lucia Executive Council. He joined a group called the Saint Lucia Labour Party in 1956. Later, he decided to start a new group of his own. In 1964, he helped form the United Workers Party, also known as the UWP.

He led this party for many different years. His goal was to lead the people of Saint Lucia toward a better future.

During his time in leadership, Saint Lucia was still ruled by the United Kingdom. Compton worked very hard to help his island become an independent nation. In 1967, Saint Lucia became an Associated State. This meant the local government could take charge of its own internal affairs. Compton became the first and only Premier during this time.

Finally, on February 22, 1979, Saint Lucia gained full independence. Compton then became the very first Prime Minister of the new nation.

Compton served as Prime Minister three separate times during his long career. He led from 1979, then again from 1982 to 1996, and once more in 2006.

Even when he was not in power, he remained a leader for the UWP. He was 80 years old when he led his party to a big win in 2006. He was a very active leader even in his later years. He also cared about bringing different Caribbean islands closer together.

In his personal life, Compton married Barbara Janice Clarke in 1968. They had five children together.

His children grew up to do many interesting things. One daughter became a marine biologist, and another became a famous chef. In 2007, Compton became very ill after having several strokes. He passed away on September 7, 2007. To honor his work, a large dam in Saint Lucia was renamed the John Compton Dam.
