To find it, look north of Saint Vincent and south of Martinique. The island is also northwest of Barbados. Most people live near the coast where the land is flatter. The middle of the island is harder to live in because of thick, dense forests. The largest city and the capital is named Castries. As of mid-2023, over 184,100 people lived on the island.

The land itself was shaped by volcanic activity. Because it is a volcanic island, the ground is very mountainous. The highest point is Mount Gimie, which reaches 949 meters above sea level. You might recognize the Pitons, which are two famous volcanic plugs.

Long ago, the Arawaks were the first people to live here. They likely arrived from northern South America between 200 and 400 CE. They called the land Louanalao, which means "Island of the Iguanas." Around 800 CE, the Kalinago people arrived and took control. They gave the island a new name, Hewanorra. This name means "there where iguanas are found." Later, European explorers began to visit the island. A 1520 Vatican globe shows the island named Sancta Lucia.

For a long time, the island was a prize that many nations wanted. The French and the British fought for control 14 different times. Because it changed hands so often, people called it the "Helen of the West." This name comes from a character in Greek myths. The British finally took complete control in 1814 after the defeat of Napoleon I. Slavery was a hard part of this history. The British abolished the slave trade in 1807 and ended slavery on the island in 1834. People of African descent became the largest group on the island.

Saint Lucia has changed a lot in recent years. It gained independence on February 22, 1979. Before that, it was part of the West Indies Federation from 1958 to 1962. Today, the country is a member of many groups like the United Nations. The economy used to rely on farming things like sugar and bananas. Now, many people work in tourism. The island is a very important place in the Caribbean.
