Castries has a long and interesting history. It was founded in 1650 by a group of 40 Frenchmen. They originally called the place Carénage. This name meant "safe anchorage" in French. In 1785, the name changed to Castries. This honored a French official named the marquis de Castries. The city has faced many hard times over the years. It had to be rebuilt after big fires in 1805 and 1813. A very large fire also happened in 1948.
