It sits on the southwestern coast of Saint Kitts Island. The city is located inside the large Basseterre Valley. Lush green hills and mountains surround the area. These include the Olivees Mountains to the north. The Conaree-Morne peaks are also nearby to the east. The name Basseterre comes from the French words for "low land." This describes the low-lying ground of the city. The city is also a safe place for ships to rest. It sits on the lee side of the island winds.

The city has a very long history in the Caribbean. The French founded the town in 1627. A man named Sieur Pierre Belain d'Esnambuc led them. Later, a governor named De Poincy made it a huge port. It even became the capital for the whole French West Indies. This included the islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique. In 1727, the British took full control of the island. Basseterre then became the capital of Saint Kitts. The city has faced many hard times over the years. It has been hurt by wars, fires, and earthquakes. Hurricanes and floods have also caused damage in the past.

One main street runs north to south called Fort Street. The city has two main centers for people to visit. One is The Circus, which is good for tourism.
