Basseterre is the capital and largest city of the nation of Saint Kitts and Nevis.

As a major commercial depot for the Leeward Islands, it serves as a vital hub for trade and travel. The city is situated within the Saint George Basseterre Parish on the southwestern coast of Saint Kitts. It sits inside the large Basseterre Valley, which is surrounded by lush green hills and mountains. To the north, the Olivees Mountains rise above the landscape. To the east, the Conaree-Morne peaks frame the area. The name Basseterre is French for "low land." This refers to the city's low-lying geography. The name also describes its position on the lee side of the island winds, which provides a safe anchorage for ships.

The city's history is deeply connected to European colonization in the Caribbean. The French founded the town in 1627 under Sieur Pierre Belain d'Esnambuc. At that time, it served as the capital for the French colony of Saint-Christophe. In 1639, a governor named Phillippe de Longvilliers de Poincy transformed the town into a successful port. Under his rule, Basseterre became the capital of the entire French West Indies colony. This large territory included the islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique. The French held this position until De Poincy died in 1660. Following the expulsion of the French, the British established full control. In 1727, Basseterre was officially named the capital of the island of St. Kitts.

Throughout its history, Basseterre has faced many difficult challenges. The city has been destroyed multiple times by various natural and human-made disasters. These include colonial wars, fires, and earthquakes. Floods, riots, and hurricanes have also caused significant damage over the centuries.

Despite these setbacks, many well-restored buildings still exist in the city center. Most of the current structures were built after a great fire occurred in 1867. One notable area is The Circus, which was modeled after Piccadilly Circus in London. In 1883, a central fountain was built there to honor Thomas Berkeley Hardtman Berkeley.

The climate in Basseterre is classified as semi-arid under the Köppen system. This means the weather is consistently warm with moderate rainfall. The city receives about 900 millimetres of precipitation annually, which is drier than many other Caribbean areas. The dry season lasts from December to April. The wet season runs from May to November. Even during the wet months, rainfall is usually brief and scattered. Daytime temperatures typically range from 29 to 31 °C. At night, temperatures drop to between 23 and 25 °C. The city enjoys abundant sunshine, often exceeding 3,000 hours each year. Steady trade winds help to reduce excessive heat and humidity.

Today, Basseterre is the primary commercial and industrial center for the country. It functions as a major financial hub in the Eastern Caribbean. The city houses the headquarters for the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank. It is also home to the Eastern Caribbean Securities Exchange. The St Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla National Bank, the largest in the region by assets, is also based here. While the sugar industry once dominated the economy, it closed in 2005 due to debt and falling prices. Now, the city focuses on other industries. These include electronics, beverages, apparel, and salt. Industrial estates also support food processing, light engineering, and rum distilling.

Transportation in Basseterre is highly developed to support its role as a hub. The city is the center for all major roads on Saint Kitts. For sea travel, the Deep Water Harbour can host large cargo ships and cruise ships. Port Zante, which was reclaimed from the sea in 1995, is used specifically for cruise ships.

The city also connects to Nevis via a busy ferry operation. For air travel, the Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport is located in the northeastern part of the city. A unique feature is the 58 km narrow-gauge railway. Originally built to transport sugar cane, it now operates as the St. Kitts Scenic Railway for tourists.

The urban layout of Basseterre follows a clear grid pattern. Four main streets run from west to east: Bay Road, Liverpool Row, Central Street, and Cayon Street. The primary north-south street is Fort Street, which contains many shops and banks. The city has two distinct centers. The Circus is a center geared toward tourism. Independence Square contains the cathedral, the courthouse, and many older buildings.

The city is also a religious center with many Christian churches. While most are Protestant, the cathedral in Basseterre is Catholic.
