Basse-Terre

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Basse-Terre is an important city in the French overseas department of Guadeloupe. It sits on the western half of the island, which is called Basse-Terre Island. This island is part of a group of islands known as the Lesser Antilles. The city serves as the capital of Guadeloupe, making it a very important place for the region.

While it is the capital, it is the second-largest city in Guadeloupe, after Pointe-à-Pitre. In 2012, the whole urban area had 44,864 people living there.

The city is located in a very interesting spot for nature. It sits right at the foot of the Soufrière volcano.

The weather here is warm and stays mostly the same all year. This is because the city sits between a tropical rainforest climate and a tropical monsoon climate. The area is mostly made of urban streets and buildings. However, you can also find farmland in the north-east and north-west parts of the commune. Three main roads connect the city to the rest of the island.

Long before the city was built, Native Americans lived on this land. They were skilled at farming and making pottery. Archaeologists even found old tools and food waste from their time.

Later, French explorers arrived in the 1600s. They built a fort and a church to start the town. The city grew around these important buildings. Over many years, the town faced many changes, including battles and many big hurricanes.

Basse-Terre is a busy place with many helpful services. It has a maritime station that welcomes large cruise ships. People can also take a ferry to visit the Îles des Saintes. The city has many schools, including 24 different educational institutions.

It also has a large hospital with 235 beds. In 2012, this hospital had a staff of 850 doctors and other workers. The city is also a center for law, with a courthouse and a prison.

Today, the city is a mix of old history and modern life. It has many different districts like Versailles and Petit-Paris. The city even has a special relationship with Pondicherry in India. Some parts of the city have changed over time because of the volcano. In 1976, many people had to leave because the Soufrière volcano was very active. Even with these changes, Basse-Terre remains a central part of life in Guadeloupe.
