Nature is very important on this island. The entire land and sea area is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

This helps protect the plants and animals there. In September 2023, new areas became UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These include the forests and the volcanoes of Mount Pelée. The Pitons du Carbet peaks are also part of this group. The island has a population of 349,925 people as of January 2024.

Many different people have lived on Martinique over a long time. First, the Arawaks lived there. Later, the Caribs arrived from the Venezuelan coast around the 11th century. Christopher Columbus saw the island in 1493. He landed there on June 15, 1502. He spent three days refilling water casks and washing laundry.

French settlers arrived in 1635. They established the first settlement at Fort Saint-Pierre.

History on the island has often been difficult. The island was controlled by the British several times. Between 1794 and 1815, Britain held the island. It was traded back to France after the Napoleonic Wars. Slavery was a part of life on many plantations. People fought hard for freedom during this time. In 1848, the French government ended slavery in Martinique. This made Martinique the first French overseas territory where this decree worked.

Natural events have also changed the island's history. On May 8, 1902, the volcano Mount Pelée erupted. This event destroyed the town of Saint-Pierre. It killed 30,000 people. One man named Ludger Sylbaris survived because of his thick prison cell walls.
