The Windward Islands are a beautiful group of islands. They sit in the Caribbean region of the Americas.

These islands are part of a larger chain called the Lesser Antilles. They are located where the Caribbean Sea meets the North Atlantic Ocean. The islands stretch from Dominica in the north down to Trinidad and Tobago in the south. They sit south of the Leeward Islands. They are also east of the Leeward Antilles near Venezuela.

Wind is the reason these islands have their name. In the West Indies, trade winds blow from the east to the west. Long ago, sailing ships used these winds to cross the ocean. The winds and ocean currents helped ships find the fastest path. Ships heading to the New World would hit these islands first. Because they faced the wind, they were called the Windward Islands. The islands behind them were called the Leeward Islands.

History has changed how these islands are grouped. Between 1833 and 1960, there was a British colony with this name. That colony included Grenada, Saint Lucia, and Saint Vincent. Barbados and Tobago were also part of it once. However, they are not part of the group today. In 1940, the island of Dominica moved groups too. It moved from the Leeward Islands to the Windward Islands.

Today, the group includes four sovereign states. These are Dominica, Grenada, Saint Lucia, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. There is also one special territory. Martinique is an overseas département of France. It has been part of France since 1946. This island is very far from the city of Paris. It is 7,000 kilometers away from that city.

Many different languages use these names for the islands. In English, we call them the Windward Islands. In French, they are called the Îles du Vent. Spanish speakers call them the Islas de Barlovento. Dutch speakers use the name Bovenwindse Eilanden. Even though the names change, the islands stay in the same place. They form the eastern boundary of the Caribbean Sea.
