These islands sit at the meeting point of two major bodies of water. The southeastern Caribbean Sea meets the western North Atlantic Ocean here. Geographically, the islands are positioned between latitudes 10° and 16° N. They also fall between longitudes 60° and 62° W. This chain forms part of the eastern boundary of the Caribbean Sea.

The name of this island group comes from the movement of air and water. In the West Indies, the prevailing trade winds blow from east to west. Long ago, sailing ships used these winds to cross the Atlantic Ocean. The combination of these winds and trans-Atlantic currents created the fastest routes. Ships heading toward the New World would reach these islands first. Because these islands faced the wind, they were called the Windward Islands. The islands located on the sheltered side were called the Leeward Islands.

Sailing vessels departing from Africa would encounter these islands during their journey. They would travel in a west-northwesterly heading toward their destinations. These destinations included Central America, Northern America, and the Caribbean. The Windward Islands acted as a physical marker for sailors. The islands were the first part of the Lesser Antilles they would reach. This positioning helped sailors navigate the vast ocean using the wind.

The political history of these islands involves several different colonial structures. Between 1833 and 1960, a British colony existed with the name Windward Islands. This specific colony originally consisted of Grenada, Saint Lucia, and Saint Vincent. Other islands were part of this British colony at different times. Barbados was included until the year 1885. Tobago was part of the colony until 1889. However, neither Barbados nor Tobago are considered part of the Windward Islands today.

Changes in administration have shifted which islands belong to this group. The island of Dominica provides a clear example of this change. Dominica was traditionally grouped with the Leeward Islands. This changed in 1940 when the island was transferred. It moved from the British Leeward Islands colony to the British Windward Islands. This move helped shape the modern group of islands we see today. Dominica now serves as one of the sovereign states in the archipelago.

Today, the Windward Islands consist of four sovereign states and one territory. The four sovereign states are Dominica, Grenada, Saint Lucia, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is the modern name for the former colony's territory. The fifth entity is the island of Martinique. Martinique is unique because it is an overseas département of France. It has held this status since the year 1946. This island is located 7,000 kilometers away from the city of Paris.

Language plays a significant role in how these islands are identified globally. In English, the term used is the Windward Islands. Other languages use different names for the same geographic area. In French, the islands are known as the Îles du Vent. Spanish speakers refer to them as the Islas de Barlovento. Dutch speakers use the term Bovenwindse Eilanden. Interestingly, in these languages, the term for Windward Islands often covers all the Lesser Antilles. This includes everything from the Virgin Islands down to Trinidad and Tobago.

Understanding the Windward Islands requires looking at their relationship to nearby landmasses. They are located south of the Leeward Islands. The Leeward Islands stretch from the Virgin Islands to Guadeloupe. To the east of the Windward Islands lie the Leeward Antilles. These southwestern islands extend from the Federal Dependencies of Venezuela to Aruba. The Windward Islands sit as a vital link in this Caribbean chain. They connect the Atlantic influences to the Caribbean Sea environment.
