The Leeward Antilles are a chain of islands in the Caribbean Sea.

They are located on the southeastern fringe of the sea. This chain sits just north of the Venezuelan coast in South America. The Leeward Antilles are part of the Lesser Antilles. They are also part of the larger West Indies region. It is important to distinguish them from the Leeward Islands. Those islands are located further to the northeast.

These islands formed through complex movements of the Earth's crust. The island arc sits along the deformed southern edge of the Caribbean Plate. This plate meets the South American Plate at a boundary. The islands were created by a process called subduction. In subduction, one tectonic plate moves under another plate. Here, the Caribbean Plate moves under the South American Plate. This movement created the physical arc of islands we see today. Unlike many other islands in the Lesser Antilles, these lack volcanic activity.

Geologists are studying how these islands change over time. Recent studies indicate that the Leeward Antilles are accreting to South America. Accretion is the process where landmasses or islands are added to a continent. This means the islands are slowly joining the South American mainland. This happens because of the specific way the plates collide. The boundary is described as an oblique arc-continent collision zone. This makes the region a significant site for studying continental growth.

The islands are divided into different political groups. One group is known as the ABC islands. These islands belong to the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The ABC islands include Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao. Aruba is a constituent country within the kingdom. Bonaire is a part of the Caribbean Netherlands. Curaçao is also a constituent country.

These islands occupy the western portion of the chain.

Other islands in the Leeward Antilles belong to Venezuela. Some are located within the Federal Dependencies of Venezuela. This group includes La Blanquilla Island, La Orchila Island, and La Sola Island.

La Tortuga Island is another part of this group. There are also several archipelagos in these waters. These include the Las Aves, Los Frailes, and Los Hermanos archipelagos. The Los Monjes and Los Roques archipelagos are also present. Finally, the chain includes the Los Testigos Islands.

More Venezuelan islands are organized into specific states. The State of Nueva Esparta includes Coche Island, Cubagua Island, and Margarita Island. The State of Falcón includes Paraguaná and Cora Island. These various groups of islands form the eastern part of the chain. The diversity of these islands shows the wide reach of the Leeward Antilles.

Each island or group has a different political connection.

The Leeward Antilles provide a clear example of plate tectonics in action. They show how subduction creates new landforms in the ocean. The movement of the Caribbean Plate is a major force in the region. This force shapes the coastline of South America. By studying this arc, scientists learn about crust-mantle interactions. They also learn how high-pressure rocks are exhumed during collisions. The islands serve as a living map of the Earth's changing surface.
