Unlike much of the Caribbean, Aruba does not have a humid tropical climate. Instead, it has a dry climate with an arid xeric landscape. This means the environment is very dry and contains specialized plants.

The history of human life on Aruba began during the prehistoric era. This era is divided into two distinct periods. The first was the Archaic or Pre-Ceramic period. During this time, people lived a lifestyle based on fishing, hunting, and gathering. They did not use pottery or practice agriculture.

Instead, they crafted tools and weapons from stone. These included sharp-edged ax blades, chisels, and knives. One notable site is Sero Muskita, where researchers found very old tools. Some of these tools may have arrived via visits from the mainland. In total, researchers have identified 33 archaic age sites on the island.

Around 950 AD, the archaic population was replaced by the Caquetío people. The Caquetío belonged to the Arawak people. They migrated to the Leeward Antilles from western Venezuela. This migration likely occurred between 850 and 1000 AD.

The Caquetío brought a more sophisticated culture to the island. They introduced agriculture and the use of ceramics, which are clay pottery. They also had a different physical appearance than the previous inhabitants. The Caquetío had longer and narrower skulls. They were also taller, with heights reaching up to 1.75 meters.

Caquetío society was organized into a complex system called a chiefdom. This is a way of governing that often precedes a kingdom. At the top of this system was a spiritual leader known as a diao. The diao held both secular and religious authority. This position was hereditary, meaning it was passed down through families. The diao could marry multiple wives to build political alliances. These alliances helped maintain connections between different groups and villages. The chiefdom was centralized but was not based on military violence. Instead, it relied on political and religious connections.

The governance of the Caquetío involved several different levels. The highest authority was the diao. Below the diao were second-tier chiefs who controlled smaller political units. At the third level were the individual villages. Aruba had five villages at different times. Three of these were larger: Ceri Noca, Tanki Flip, and Savaneta. Two smaller villages were located near Tanki Leendert and Parkietenbos. These villages were usually placed near water sources or good farmland. The Caquetío also engaged in regional trade. They traded items such as salt, tobacco, canoes, and beads.

Aruba's name has several possible origins from different languages. The name likely comes from the Caquetío word Oruba. This means "well situated island." The Taino people called the island Arubeira. The Kalinago people had two names, including Ora Oubao, which means "Shell island." In the 16th century, the Spanish called it Isla de Oruba. Some people mistakenly believe the name comes from the Spanish phrase "Oro hubo." This phrase means "There was gold once." However, the Spanish actually called these "islas inútiles." This means "useless islands" because they saw no mineral wealth.

Despite the Spanish belief, gold was eventually found on the island. In 1824, a 12-year-old herder named Willem Rasmijn discovered gold. This event triggered the Aruban Gold Rush.
