It is part of a group known as the ABC islands, which includes Aruba and Curaçao. These islands sit off the coast of Venezuela. Bonaire holds a unique political status today. It is a special municipality of the Netherlands. This means it is officially a "public body" within the Dutch nation. The island's capital is the port of Kralendijk. This city sits on the leeward, or western, coast of the island.

The island is famous for its arid climate. This means it is very dry and stays sunny all year. Because of this, it sits outside the main development region for tropical cyclones.

The geography of Bonaire includes both land and vibrant marine environments. To the west, across the sea, lies the uninhabited islet of Klein Bonaire.

This small islet features white sandy beaches and low-growing vegetation. You can find cactus and sparse palm trees near its waters. Both Bonaire and Klein Bonaire are home to fringing reefs. These reefs are protected by the Bonaire National Marine Park. A group called STINAPA Bonaire manages these natural areas. The island is a major destination for scuba diving and snorkeling. Visitors enjoy easy access to many shore diving sites and shipwrecks.

Human history on the island began during the Archaic period. Early inhabitants lived in small, family-based groups of about 100 people. These people were semi-nomadic hunter-gatherers and fishers. The earliest evidence of habitation is found at Lagun and dates to approximately 3400 BP. Around 500 AD, the Caquetío Indians arrived from South America. They were a branch of the Arawak people. They spoke an Arawakan language and left behind rock paintings and petroglyphs in caves.

The Caquetío appeared very tall to the first Europeans. Because of this, the Spanish called the ABC islands "las Islas de los Gigantes," or the islands of the giants.

Spanish explorers arrived in the area in 1499. Alonso de Ojeda visited a neighboring island that was likely Bonaire. In 1500, the cartographer Juan de la Cosa included Bonaire on his Mappa Mundi. He called it "Isla do Palo Brasil." The Spanish colonized the island for about one century. In 1526, Juan Martínez de Ampiés brought domesticated animals to the islands. These included cows, donkeys, goats, horses, pigs, and sheep. The Spanish used Bonaire as a cattle plantation. They raised cattle primarily for their hides rather than for meat. Most Spanish inhabitants lived in the inland town of Rincon. This location provided safety from pirate attacks.

The Dutch West India Company changed the island's direction in the 1600s. The Dutch conquered Bonaire in March 1636. They built Fort Oranje in 1639 to secure their control.

While Curaçao became a center for the slave trade, Bonaire became a company plantation. Salt became a major export product for the Dutch. Workers harvested solar salt around the Blue Pan. This industry eventually led to the development of the Salt Pier.

During the 1710s, the slave population grew due to unrest on Curaçao. Many slaves were eventually freed by the Emancipation Regulation in 1862. A total of 607 government slaves and 151 private slaves were freed at that time.

World War II brought significant changes to the island's infrastructure. During the war, Bonaire was a protectorate of Britain and the United States. The American army constructed the Flamingo Airport as an air force base.

This airport later became useful for civilian travel. The island also hosted an internment camp for German and Austrian citizens. This camp operated from 1940 to 1947. After the war ended, the empty military barracks were converted into the island's first hotel, the Zeebad. The post-war years saw the growth of a tourism economy. New hotels and industries, like salt modernization, helped the economy develop.

Today, Bonaire is a growing and diverse community. As of January 1, 2025, the population reached 26,552 permanent residents. This is an increase of 10,011 people since 2012.

The population is culturally rich. About 80% of inhabitants are Dutch nationals. Nearly 60% of residents were born in the former Netherlands Antilles or Aruba. In 2010, the Netherlands Antilles dissolved. This led to Bonaire becoming a special municipality of the Netherlands. The island also adopted the US dollar as its official currency in 2011. This mix of Dutch administration and Caribbean nature defines the island today.
