Today, the island is a special municipality of the Netherlands. It is officially known as a public body. It is part of the Dutch Caribbean region. This region includes Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Saba, Sint Eustatius, and Sint Maarten. Together with Bonaire and Saba, it forms the BES Islands. This group is also called the Caribbean Netherlands. Travelers arrive at the island via the F. D. Roosevelt Airport.

The island has a complex history of shifting control.

The earliest known inhabitants were the Arawaks. Caribs also lived on the island later. The Arawaks called the island Aloi, meaning "Cashew Island." European explorers Francis Drake and John Hawkins first recorded seeing the island in 1595. Between the 17th and early 19th centuries, the island changed hands twenty-one times. It moved between the Netherlands, Britain, and France. In 1636, the Dutch West India Company took possession of the island. Before this, Dutch settlers called it Nieuw Zeeland. The name Sint Eustatius is Dutch for Saint Eustace. This name refers to a legendary Christian martyr.

In the 1700s, the island became a major center for trade.

It earned the nickname "Golden Rock" because of its high profits. The island acted as a free port starting in 1756. This meant there were no customs duties on goods. Its location was very strategic for international commerce. It sat between Danish, British, French, and Spanish territories. The island had a large, useful harbor for many ships. This made it a central point for transshipment. Ships moved goods and people across the Atlantic Ocean.

However, the island's economy was built on a dark system. Sint Eustatius was a major transit point for the transatlantic slave trade. Enslaved Africans were brought to the island and moved to other locations. Many were sent to British, French, or Spanish islands in the eastern Caribbean. The colonists built a two-story slave house at the Waterfort. This depot housed about 400 to 450 people until around 1740.

Large plantations also existed across the island. There were 75 plantations in 1774. These farms grew crops like sugarcane, cotton, tobacco, coffee, and indigo. Names like Gilboa and Zelandia were used for these sites.

The island played a vital role in the American War for Independence.

It supplied American insurgents with essential war materials. Gunpowder was one of the most important supplies provided. Nearly half of all American Revolutionary military supplies came through the island. Most American communications to Europe also passed through Sint Eustatius. On November 16, 1776, a ship called the Andrew Doria arrived.

Governor Johannes de Graaff replied with an eleven-gun salute from Fort Oranje. This was the first international acknowledgment of American independence.

This significant event led to serious conflict with Great Britain. The British were unhappy with the trade between the island and the United States. This tension helped cause the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War from 1780 to 1784. In 1781, a massive British fleet arrived to invade.

Admiral George Brydges Rodney led the fleet. He brought 15 ships of the line and over 3,000 soldiers. The British had more than 1,000 cannons. In contrast, the island had only twelve cannons and sixty men. Governor De Graaff surrendered the island to avoid bloodshed. The French later recaptured the island ten months later. The Dutch eventually regained control in 1784.

The frequent changes in ownership eventually harmed the island. Between 1795 and 1815, the island saw many French and British occupations. These occurred during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. These conflicts diverted trade away from Sint Eustatius to other islands. As a result, the island's economy collapsed. Today, the island remains a unique part of the Dutch Caribbean. It holds many historical reminders of its past through its ruins and monuments.
